What is C2PA (Content Credentials)?
C2PA is an open standard for recording where an image came from and how it was made. Its consumer-facing name is Content Credentials. The record is embedded in the file and can travel with it to social platforms and viewers.

How to use it
- 1Check the image for a C2PA or Content Credentials indicator.
- 2Read what the report says; checking is read-only.
- 3Rebuild the image if you want a file without the container.
- 4Re-scan the output to confirm the credential is gone.
What a C2PA record can contain
The container is structured, and its fields depend on the tool that wrote it.
- The application and version used.
- A history of edits or generative actions.
- A statement about whether AI was involved.
- A claim signer, so a platform can mark it as verified.
Where C2PA lives by format
The container is format-specific.
| Format | C2PA location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | APP11 (C2PA/JUMBF) | Common for editor exports. |
| PNG | caBX chunk | Used by many publishing tools. |
| WebP | C2PA chunk | Compact and web-friendly. |
| AVIF / HEIC | ISO-BMFF C2PA box | Newer formats and phone captures. |
Why C2PA matters
Platforms that take part in provenance standards read the credential and may show a label such as an AI info note. It is the file, not the picture, that drives the label, which is why two visually similar images can behave differently.
Provenance is not authentication
A credential records claims about a file's history. Whether that is enough to trust an image depends on the signer and the platform. C2PA is a record, not a guarantee of truth.
How to check and remove it
MetaRase detects supported C2PA containers without a full cryptographic validation, and can rebuild the image to drop the container. It reports presence rather than the manifest contents, which is enough to decide what to do.
Frequently asked questions
Is C2PA the same as Content Credentials?
Yes. Content Credentials is the consumer name for a C2PA-based provenance record.
Does every C2PA file look the same?
No. Credentials vary by tool and version, and some are only partially embedded.
Can I read the exact edits in a record?
Not with MetaRase. It reports that a supported container is present, not the full manifest.
Which files can carry C2PA?
Commonly JPEG, PNG and WebP, and some video and PDF formats. MetaRase handles the image formats it can decode.
Does checking upload my image?
No. The scan runs locally in your browser.
Will removing C2PA break the image?
No. The image is rebuilt from its pixels and remains a normal JPEG, PNG or WebP.

Inspect, clean, and verify in your browser
Your image bytes never leave your device. MetaRase rebuilds the image locally, then scans the output again before you download it.
