Made with AI on X explained
X shows a Made with AI label when the poster switches it on in Content Disclosure, and in some cases when X applies it after detecting AI signals. X confirms C2PA integration for automatic labels but does not publish every signal or decision rule, so a clean file is a precaution, not a guarantee.

How to use it
- 1Check whether the label was set by you or applied by X.
- 2Scan the image for C2PA, XMP and IPTC AI signals.
- 3Rebuild the file to remove supported metadata.
- 4Verify the cleaned copy with a second scan.
- 5Post the cleaned file, and use Content Disclosure honestly when AI was used.
Two ways a post gets the label
The same wording can come from two different places, and only one of them is under your control.
- A voluntary Made with AI disclosure you enable in Content Disclosure.
- A label X applies itself after detecting AI signals at upload.
- A watermark or label on media generated inside X's own tools, which is separate from file metadata.
What X confirms about C2PA
X's official brand-safety documentation confirms that X is a C2PA member and integrates C2PA for automatic AI labels. That confirms file provenance is part of the system, but X has not published every signal or decision rule. A clean file remains a precaution, not a guarantee. Independent tests are consistent with C2PA metadata being one trigger, not the only one.
Can you remove the label from a post?
If you set the disclosure yourself, you can remove it from the post's content disclosure menu. A label X applied automatically is decided at upload and is usually not editable. Deleting the post and publishing a new one with a cleaned file creates a new post, but it does not change the old post and does not guarantee that the new upload will stay unlabelled. X's help pages do not describe an appeal flow for these labels.
Where the metadata lives by format
Different formats store provenance in different places.
| Format | Provenance location | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | APP11 C2PA, APP1 XMP | The usual case for editor exports. |
| PNG | caBX C2PA, iTXt XMP | Lossless files; check text chunks. |
| WebP | C2PA and XMP chunks | Compact files used widely on the web. |
| HEIC / AVIF | ISO-BMFF Exif, XMP and C2PA boxes | Common on newer phones and exports. |
What MetaRase can and cannot do
Cleaning changes the file you control, not the post that is already live.
- It can remove supported C2PA, XMP and IPTC metadata by rebuilding the image locally.
- It cannot remove a Made with AI label that X already applied to a post.
- It cannot change X's detection or verify a watermark inside the pixels.
Check the file before posting
Scan the exact export you plan to upload and read the report. If it lists C2PA or AI workflow fields, clean it and scan again. Then decide your disclosure: cleaning metadata does not remove an obligation to say that content is AI-generated.
Keep a provenance record if you may need it
If you might need to prove where an image came from, keep the original with its credentials before you clean a copy. Once the container is rebuilt, the embedded record is gone and cannot be recreated from the cleaned file.
Frequently asked questions
Does X add the Made with AI label automatically?
It can. X also lets you add the label yourself through Content Disclosure. X does not publish which signals trigger an automatic label.
Is the Made with AI label optional?
The disclosure toggle is set by the poster, but X may still apply a label itself. Rules and enforcement can change.
Can I remove Made with AI after posting?
Remove a disclosure you set yourself from the post menu. An automatically applied label is decided at upload and is usually not editable. Deleting the post and publishing a cleaned file creates a new post; it does not guarantee the new post will be unlabelled.
Why did my photo get the label?
X may read file signals such as C2PA metadata, or the label may come from a disclosure. X does not document the full list.
Does cleaning metadata guarantee no label?
No. It removes supported file signals; X's detection, watermarks and disclosures are separate.
Is removing AI metadata legal?
For images you created it is generally allowed. Do not strip someone else's copyright or ownership data, and follow platform disclosure rules and local law.
Does a screenshot avoid the label?
Not reliably. A screenshot can drop metadata but also reduces quality. Cleaning the file gives you a verifiable result.

Your image bytes never leave your device. MetaRase rebuilds the image locally, then scans the output again before you download it.
