Tool
Image metadata remover
Every photo carries more than pixels. Camera settings, timestamps, location, editing history, and sometimes AI provenance travel in the file's metadata. This tool removes the supported embedded metadata by rebuilding the image in your browser, then scans the result so you can see the difference.
How to use it
- 1Add one or more images by dragging them in or using the file picker.
- 2Read the scan report: EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, C2PA, and workflow indicators.
- 3Choose JPEG, PNG, or WebP, set quality and optional resize, then clean the image.
- 4Review the before and after report and download the rebuilt file.
What gets removed
Rebuilding from pixels drops the metadata that was stored in the original container.
- EXIF: camera, lens, serial numbers, timestamps, and orientation.
- GPS: latitude, longitude, altitude, and location timestamps.
- XMP and IPTC: editing history, creator fields, and workflow data.
- C2PA / Content Credentials: supported provenance containers.
- Comments, embedded thumbnails, and colour-profile extras.
What stays in the picture
Anything rendered into the pixels stays: visible watermarks, burned-in timestamps, or the scene itself. MetaRase is a metadata tool, not an image editor.
Where the metadata lives
The container differs by format, which is why a rebuild is more reliable than deleting individual tags.
| Format | Metadata location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | APP1 (EXIF/XMP), APP11 (C2PA), APP13 (IPTC) | The most common photo format. |
| PNG | eXIf, iTXt, caBX (C2PA) | Lossless output available. |
| WebP | EXIF, XMP, ICCP, C2PA chunks | Small files for the web. |
| GIF | Application and comment extensions | First frame only. |
Why rebuild instead of editing tags
Tag editors often leave leftovers or malformed segments, and hidden structures can survive. Exporting a fresh file from the canvas produces a clean, predictable container and gives you something to verify.
Private by design
Scanning, cleaning, and verification run in your browser. The image is not uploaded and no copy is stored. You keep the original; MetaRase only produces a new file on your device.
How to verify the result
The cleaned file is scanned again and shown beside the original report. A clean after-report is your confirmation that the supported indicators are gone.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats are supported?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, and GIF first frame, plus AVIF, HEIC, or HEIF where your browser can decode them. SVG cleaning is not supported.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and image bytes never reach MetaRase servers.
Does it remove SynthID or invisible watermarks?
No. Pixel-level watermarks are part of the image data, not file metadata.
Will the image look different?
In lossless mode the compressed image data is untouched, so the picture does not change. Rebuilding re-encodes the image; there can be a small quality difference depending on the output format and quality setting.
Can I remove metadata without re-encoding?
Yes, for JPEG, PNG and WebP: lossless mode strips supported metadata from the container without re-encoding the image. GIF, AVIF and HEIC files are cleaned by rebuilding, which re-encodes them.
Does it keep the original?
Yes. MetaRase produces a new file; your original is untouched unless you overwrite it.

Inspect, clean, and verify in your browser
Your image bytes never leave your device. MetaRase rebuilds the image locally, then scans the output again before you download it.
