EXIF remover
EXIF is the block your camera writes into every photo: the device and lens, serial numbers, shutter settings, the original timestamp, and often GPS. MetaRase removes that block in your browser — lossless for JPEG, PNG and WebP, or by rebuilding the image — so it no longer travels with your file.
How to use it
- 1Add the photos you want to clean.
- 2Check the scan report to see which EXIF, GPS, and related indicators are present.
- 3Pick an output format and quality, then clean the image.
- 4Confirm the after-scan is clean and download the cleaned photo.
What EXIF can reveal
The block is small but detailed. On its own or combined, these fields describe exactly how and where a photo was taken.
- Camera and lens model, and sometimes the body or lens serial number.
- Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and focal length.
- The original capture date and time, often to the second.
- GPS coordinates where the camera had location services on.
Orientation and EXIF
Some tools strip EXIF and leave a photo rotated, because the orientation flag is lost. MetaRase decodes the image with its orientation already applied, so the rebuilt file stays upright without needing the tag.
EXIF is not the picture
Removing EXIF does not edit the content. Visible details, watermarks, and the scene itself are part of the pixels and stay exactly as they are.
Where EXIF lives by format
The container changes with the file type.
| Format | EXIF location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | APP1 EF segment | The usual case for camera photos. |
| PNG | eXIf chunk | Appears after editing or conversion. |
| WebP | EXIF chunk | Common for web images. |
| HEIC / AVIF | ISO-BMFF Exif box | Typical of newer phone photos. |
Private and reversible
Cleaning runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and your original stays on your device. If you have a second-hand camera or a shared device, cleaning removes fields that could otherwise identify you or your equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Will my photo look different after removing EXIF?
It depends on the mode. Lossless stripping leaves the compressed image data untouched, so the picture does not change. Rebuilding re-encodes the image, so there can be a small quality change depending on the chosen format and quality setting.
Does it remove the camera serial number?
Yes. Camera and lens serial numbers are EXIF fields inside the container, and they are dropped when the image is rebuilt.
Can I remove EXIF without re-encoding?
Yes, for JPEG, PNG and WebP: lossless mode strips the supported metadata from the container without re-encoding the image. GIF, AVIF and HEIC files are cleaned by rebuilding instead, which re-encodes them.
Does it remove the capture date?
Yes. The original timestamp lives in EXIF and is removed along with the rest of the block.
Is EXIF the same on every camera?
No. Cameras and phones write different fields. MetaRase reports supported indicators rather than a fixed list.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Cleaning and verification happen locally in your browser.

Your image bytes never leave your device. MetaRase rebuilds the image locally, then scans the output again before you download it.
