Tool
C2PA checker
C2PA, also branded as Content Credentials, is a provenance container that can travel inside an image. This checker scans the file locally and tells you whether a supported C2PA indicator is present, before you decide what to do with it.
How to use it
- 1Add the image you want to inspect.
- 2Read the scan report for a C2PA or JUMBF indicator.
- 3Optionally clean the image to rebuild it without the container.
- 4Re-scan the output to confirm the result.
How the check works
MetaRase looks for C2PA and JUMBF signatures in known container locations, such as the caBX chunk in PNG and APP11 segments in JPEG. It reports presence rather than parsing a full manifest, so it is fast and private.
What C2PA can record
Content Credentials can name the tool, the edits applied, and whether generative AI was involved. That is exactly the data a platform reads to show a provenance label.
- The application and version used to create or edit the file.
- A history of actions or edits applied.
- A statement about generative AI involvement.
- A claim signer, where a certificate was used.
Where C2PA lives by format
The container differs by format.
| Format | C2PA location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | APP11 (C2PA/JUMBF) | Common for editor exports. |
| PNG | caBX chunk | Used by many publishing tools. |
| WebP | C2PA chunk | Compact and web-friendly. |
| AVIF / HEIC | ISO-BMFF C2PA box | Newer formats and phone captures. |
Check then decide
Checking is read-only. If you only want to know whether a file carries provenance data, you can stop at the report and change nothing. If you want a clean file, you can rebuild it in the same session. If the file was described to you as carrying Content Credentials rather than C2PA, the Content Credentials checker page starts from that vocabulary.
What this checker is not
It is not a full cryptographic validator. A complete validation of every manifest signature is out of scope; the goal is to tell you quickly and privately whether a supported provenance container is present.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a full C2PA validator?
No. It detects supported C2PA and JUMBF containers in common image formats. A complete cryptographic validation of every manifest is out of scope.
Does checking modify my file?
Scanning never changes the file. MetaRase only rebuilds the image if you explicitly clean it.
Which formats can carry C2PA?
Commonly JPEG, PNG, and WebP, and some video and PDF formats. MetaRase handles the image formats it can decode in the browser.
Is the file uploaded for checking?
No. The scan runs locally in your browser.
What is JUMBF?
It is the container format that C2PA content uses to package its claims and assertions.
Can I keep the credentials and still share the image?
Yes. Checking is optional and read-only; cleaning is a separate, deliberate step.

Inspect, clean, and verify in your browser
Your image bytes never leave your device. MetaRase rebuilds the image locally, then scans the output again before you download it.
